Could anybody give me some pointers for beach based sharks. Me and a mate are looking to head to tennyson maybe??? and have never really tried before. Looking to drop baits with my Kayak. Got an assortment of baits at hand Squid, Tommies, Mullet and Snook fillets, but which is best? The main thing I been wondering though is what rigg is best suited to the beach? Balloon or wieghted? Or does that depend moreso on wind and weather conditions? Anything else I need to know in my quest that could help me? Cheers for any help

Can t really help with specifics matey, but im pretty sure if you chuck anything liked you mentioned on the bottom, the crabs will devour it at the moment. L3GACY and Fishnfreak can probablly help you a bit more.

Hmmm yes crabs I didnt even think of that. That is a good point. I suppose at some points in time crabs can be the last thing on your mind.

I always balloon. In a nutshell (you'll develop your own mehtods that suit I'm sure): I use a wire trace around 6ft long crimped straight onto a hook. I attach the trace to main line via a heavy duty swivel (others don't) and attach the balloon to the swivel by poking the opened swivel point through the end of the flappy bit of balloon next to the knot (you'll work out what I am saying ). That way if you hook up the balloon will come straight off. Obviously you need an easterly for fishing from shore in Adelaide with a balloon. The next week looks pretty good for that. Good luck.

I know a few people that set their baits on the bottom at Tennyson and they have caught a lot more bronzies than me. My experience is with big reels, big broomsticks and massive baits. Now I've got the SS I'll be targetting the little fellas so I'll be of more help soon. I would use fairly light gear and fairly small baits (whole slimey macks or squid). Given what you've got on hand I would go with a whole mullet, snook fillet or whole squid. Without getting some specialist gear with a kilometre of line I wouldn't bother with bigger baits / ballooning out hundreds of metres.

Cheers for the pointers fellas, came in very handy.Me and a mate went out friday night to dip a couple of baits couldn't have been too far wrong cause the guys next to us caught one using similar methods, so I figure it must be a matter of time till we get onto one. Also caught a couple of just legal yellowfin whiting so they also must just be on there way in.
GEEEEEEEZ I love summer.

I used to do a lot of shark fishing off beaches in my youth. Far west coast best loaction. My experience was that they are not fussy on bait but a oily fish (eg ST) fillett would work fine. I used to use 1, of 500lb bs steel onto a 10/0 hand forged steel hook. Reel was ABU 10000. Have had the rell stripped in one run; the steel bittem through, and the hook straighted. Biggest landed was 5 ft but lost the big ones.
I never tried ballooning as it would only give extra distance with an offshore breeze and that would flatten the seas. Good surf was better.
Good luck
