So guys, we could soon have our own site. I'd really like to see it become the home of kayak fishing in SA so it's very important to me that we have interesting pages with valuable content.
I'll definitely get a page dedicated to buying kayaks, where to buy them and what each store has on offer.
There will also be an events page listing all of the events coming up and entry guidelines.
I'm also think of having a DIY area where I'll do a whole heap of projects. This will add valuable info for newbies but any projects not on my yak (kayak trolley etc) can be sold off to members with funds raised going towards paying back Rob.
What else do you want to see?

Yep, that's exactly why it needs to be done. The next step is getting SAKFA discounts out of them. XD

I am confused OK, so maybe it has to do with age; However, What do you mean by we could soon have our own site? It would seem to go without saying that "our" site SAKFA will be the home of kayak fishing in SA. You guys have it down pretty good. Main interests is fishing from a kayak and all the things that go into supporting that. The big thing in my opinion is to get out in groups and share the experience. Having our events keeps everyone interested. The Mariner (SA yakfisher btw) got the AKFF started and it is a great site. I love to browse it now and again; however, I far more prefer to participate in a site that is decicated to us SA yakfishers. I don't understand the part about selling off projects to members and paying back Rob. What is Rob owed? Can it be shared around? I feel embarrased to think that someone might be carrying a financial burden which I should share in as I share in the results. <<??>>

Good questions mate.
Kirk the SAKFA forum as it stands right now is hosted by a company called proboards. That is reflected in our domain or URL. It means we are forced to use their bulletin board software and I am very limited in what I can do. As a result there are things we miss out on (uploading photos for example) and members who have severe problems using the forum because of the way I have set it up. These issues would most likely be resolved by reverting to the original skin and taking away features which is an option however it is my goal to provide a user friendly experience that is attractive to prospective members.
While we are small some (including myself at one stage) will think "hey, couple of people are having a few issues, no big deal" well the problem is that as the board grows there will be more and more people that have issues using the board. On top of that, because proboards runs the free forum service for a profit it will be near impossible for us to move our existing data over to a new forum. Every day we wait is another day worth of posts we will probably eventually lose.
Best option? Buy our own domain and pay for a web hosting service and bulletin board software. The reality is VBulletin, the software I would most like to use (as I have experience with it and believe it is the best) will cost SAKFA US$180. I would personally choose to go with a company like Media Temple for hosting, this would cost US$20 a month plus we would need to buy a domain.
The compromise? Use open source bulletin board software (free). This is the same software AKFF use and whilst I would prefer VBulletin... well lets face it, it's free! For hosting we will go with Bluehost, this is basically a more "professional" side of the company that AKFF use. Yes this also means we will have to deal with the same "CPU QUOTA" BS that AKFF does. This will cost us US$6.95 a month and we will be given a domain free of charge. The catch is we need to pay for 24 months of hosting up front. Now I'm not happy about using bluehost and phpBB but it makes us exactly the same as the AKFF and they seem to manage.
The bottom line is it will cost us AU$250 to get ourselves off the ground and set up for the first two years. Rob and I are currently discussing how we will be funding it and he has made a very generous offer. Also no we're not just dumping our money into the site, I will ensure that anything Rob or myself put into the site is returned to us eventually.

i hope you have the easy to post images software that AKff has - so simple to browse your own 'pute and attach
there's a couple of other forums that i'm on that you have to get a flicker a/c or whatever so i don't even bother with them
thanks for the software donation

I think it's important on this site for Jon to stop bagging Bream fishing and everything to do with bream fishing. I realise that him and I have a bit of a joke sometimes but there may be newcomers that won't contribute their stories and experiences because they will feel like they are not wanted here. My only thoughts on this is this site is not about just fishing for bream or just fishing the big blue wobbly, it's about fishing from a kayak and it doesn't matter if it's for tadpoles to tuna you have to show respect for all fishing contributions. I realise that some fish aren't as glamorous to some of our moderators but a fish caught from a kayak should be respected no matter what. My 2cents. Cheers Darren

wow sounds like Jon might have hit a nerve sorry Darren. To be honest, i am a bit jealous of you guys who can catch 40cm+ Fish more often than not, i have only fished for bream once out of the kayak, so maybe it is something i should take on more. And Jon, please stop making people angry. ;D

No Rob he hasn't hit a nerve with me but I have noticed that it doesn't look good for your site to have one specific form of fishing looked down on and I just thought it might put newcomers off from contributing. To me fishing is fishing but to do it from a kayak is what makes it a good sport, not what we fish for. Anyway we all know Jons gonna make us angry at sometime or another ;D ;D ;D Cheers Darren.

Darren: I agree 100% - Kayak Fishing is the name of the game! And I can understand how a new comer might get the wrong idea given the banter that sometimes flows.

I agree, to an extent. Could be percieved differently by outsiders however so long as you just take it as me giving ya shi7 Darren then it's fine. I'm not going to exhile bream fisho's lol, I'll keep my bream bashing to PM's and 4am phone calls. XD
