I haven't actually run this one by Rob yet but he's an easy going little guy. I am (personally) not interested in having any sponsors on the forum (competitions is another matter). I don't want members to be disallowed to quote prices of other places "in fairness for the sponsors that pay for coverage on the site" or for people to be swayed toward a certain company because of the relationship they have with the forum.
The dilema is if we want to get things the way we want (own domain, own site with helpful article, proper forum, advertising profits that goes to us instead of proboards etc) then we need a small amount of money to cover the first 24 months of hosting fees. Rob and I are happy to put the cash in ourselves as well will take it back from profits made on advertising.
I was thinking that we would be able to offer our members more features (mainly random prizes) and sooner if we had a way of raising extra funds. Now at this stage I need to state that I will never allow the situation to occur where members need to pay for more priveledges on a forum, membership will happen but it will be for the club not the forum. Fishnuts summed it up well a few months ago when he said "I'll never pay for something I can get for free elsewhere anyway".
So, we're not talking pledge drives or asking for your money but would people consider supporting sausage sizzles at events or similar things?
The first meet and greet will be supplied by myself free of charge so don't stress I'm not going back on my word, this is for future events.

merchandising and donations may enable the forum to make money. initial outlays may be high for merchandise unless orders are prepaid, but still alittle profit can still be squeezed out. possibly members trades(jobs) may be of some use in sourcing products or services during fundraising drives

I see no point in doing a run of 20 tshirts or 30 hats. As you said, it's also one of those "need money to make money" situations. I'm opposed to donations because if this forum weren't my baby I wouldn't make a donation for nothing, I would much rather get something in return and have proceeds benefit the board.

Sorry, misread as donations from forum members. I'm talking to a butcher who is considering supplying the meat for our sausage sizzles so yes, we're chasing donations in that sense.

Just thinking outside the square, and maybe more beneficial once there are more members, but I'd be happy to donate "hot laps" in a full race car at Mallala during a race meeting out there. This could then be auctioned off to the highest bidder over a week on a seperate thread. It's hard to put money on what that sort of thing is worth. I've seen it go for $2k at an auction before, but also for as little as $200. That could get us going....?

A generous offer and top marks for thinking outside the square Adam. I think you're right though, need more members to make it worthwhile.
